Ask an accountant: creators

The questions creators actually ask, answered the way they would be answered on a call: the short answer first, then why, then the free tool if there is one. Rates are those applying in 2026/27.

25 questions, answered plainly

Yes: every stream is trading income, and the return wants the year's gross. The demo creator's five streams plus the gift drawer make £42,600 of gross income, £30,600 of profit and a £4,687.80 bill. One pass through the calculator turns your own streams into the same three numbers.

The gross. The demo's £24,000 of brand work banks £20,400 after the 15 per cent cut, and the return shows £24,000 of income with the commission as an expense. Reporting the net understates turnover and mismatches the platform reports HMRC reads.

Invoice and Payment Tracker

For income tax, yes: voluntary or not, they are receipts of the trade. For VAT they usually sit outside the scope while genuinely no-perks; a tier that buys perks is a membership and joins the VAT count. Book them gross, by platform, like everything else.

Freelance Bookkeeping Template

Anything wholly and exclusively for the content: kit at its honest business share, editing software, props, travel to shoots, use of home on the flat rate. Ordinary clothes fail the test however on-brand; costumes and filming-only makeup can pass. The log carries the shares.

When strings attach, yes: a brief, a tag, an expected post makes the item barter, taxable at market value. The demo drawer of £1,800 costs £468 at the basic-band margin and £756 in the higher band. Genuinely unsolicited one-offs with no strings stay outside.

Employed vs Freelance Calculator

What a customer would pay for it today: the real selling price, not the inflated retail in the pitch email. Note the price and its source in the log the week the item arrives; contemporaneous beats reconstructed every time.

Freelance Bookkeeping Template

No. The income arose when the obligation was met, and regifting, donating or binning the item afterwards does not undo it. The decision point is before acceptance: decline, negotiate product into product-plus-fee, or accept knowingly.

Employed vs Freelance Calculator

With a posting schedule or agreed coverage, yes: barter at the package's customer price, flights and rooms included. A genuine invitation with no obligations is hospitality rather than income. Write the call and its reason in the log either way.

When gross trading income passes £1,000 in a tax year: register by the 5 October that follows. Gross means turnover, not profit, with gifts-with-strings counted. At or under £1,000, full relief usually means no registration, records kept.

Ask an Accountant: Freelancers

The platform reported your year and no return matched it. Do not ignore it and do not improvise: the fix is a correct registration and return, usually far cheaper than the letter suggests, and we handle these regularly. Bring the platform statements.

Year-End Checklist for Freelancers

Income by stream gross of cuts, agency statements, the gifts log, receipts and the kit register: six years. The platform sends you a copy of what it reports; keep that with the year it describes.

An advance on next year: once a bill passes £1,000, half is added on 31 January and half on 31 July. The demo's £4,687.80 bill makes the first January £7,031.70. It is not extra tax, it is timing, and it still empties unready bank accounts.

Tax Reserve Tracker

Yes, by claim, and honestly: reduce to what the year will really owe and nothing lower, because HMRC charges interest on reductions that turn out optimistic. Rerun the numbers first; reduce second.

Tax Reserve Tracker

Fixed penalties start immediately and grow with delay, and interest runs on late payment from day one. Everything about lateness is more expensive than the ten minutes registration takes; if a deadline is already missed, move today, not in January.

Year-End Checklist for Freelancers

UK brand deals, UK affiliate commissions and consumer sales count; ad revenue billed to an overseas platform is outside the scope; genuine no-perks tips are not consideration. The demo counts £30,000 of £40,800, leaving £60,000 of headroom on the rolling test.

VAT Flat Rate Scheme Checker

Only once registered; then UK brand work is standard rated at 20 per cent on top of the fee, which the brand usually recovers. Unregistered, no VAT line at all, and the fee counts toward the threshold that would change that.

VAT Flat Rate Scheme Checker

Billed to an overseas platform, it is a business supply outside the scope of UK VAT: no VAT charged and nothing counted toward the threshold. It still lands on the income tax return in full, which is the pairing that confuses everyone once.

VAT Flat Rate Scheme Checker

Sometimes: input VAT on kit, software and an agency's commission comes back, and brand-side finance teams read a VAT number as scale. The price is quarterly returns and 20 per cent on UK consumer sales. Worth a proper conversation before the threshold forces it.

VAT Flat Rate Scheme Checker

A third of profit, moved to a separate account the day money lands. It slightly over-saves at small profits and lands close once payments on account start, which is exactly when the habit pays for itself.

Tax Reserve Tracker

When the boring numbers already work: six months of personal costs banked, the next quarter half booked, the reserve running, insurance priced. The checklist walks the leap in order, runway first.

Going Limited Checklist

Not by default. The company wins on sustained profits, liability and brand-contract optics, and costs admin and accountancy to run. Price it on your own numbers with the calculator before anyone sells you a formation package.

Sole Trader or Limited Calculator

Quarterly digital updates through software instead of one annual return: over £50,000 of income it is already here, £30,000 joins from April 2027 and £20,000 from April 2028. The readiness checklist is the calm version of the transition.

MTD Readiness Checklist

One tracker, one truth: every deal with its stage, gross fee, commission, usage window and paid flag, so the money still out there is a number rather than a feeling. Chase on a schedule; statutory interest is the quiet backstop.

Invoice and Payment Tracker

Counted deliverables with dates, a usage window with territories, priced exclusivity, a kill fee, payment terms of 30 days or better, and the disclosure expectations stated. The checklist runs every deal through the same page.

New Client Onboarding Checklist

Need, rarely, at the start; benefit from, early. The first useful moment is before the first full return, the second is the month full-time starts, and both cost less than fixing January in February. Ask us what the year looks like; that conversation is free.

Going Limited Checklist

No question matches that. Try a shorter word, or ask us directly and it gets added.
