VAT Calculator
Add VAT to a net price, or take it back out of a gross one. The second direction is the one people get wrong: the VAT inside a gross figure comes out by dividing, not by knocking 20% off.

Net, before VAT –

Gross, VAT included –
Taking VAT out is a divide, not a subtraction: £1,200 gross at 20% holds £200 of VAT, because £1,200 ÷ 1.2 = £1,000 net. Knocking 20% off would overstate the VAT by £40. Registration becomes compulsory at £90,000 of taxable turnover in any rolling 12 months.

The workbook version runs both directions side by side and adds a mixed-rate invoice sheet: up to ten lines at 20%, 5% and 0% with net, VAT and gross totals, handy for invoicing and quick return checks.

RESOURCES
Fresh takes on business and accounting.
Company law allows accounts to run for 18 months; corporation tax never allows an accounting period longer than 12. Here is how the split is drawn.
The associated companies rules get more involved once a group has layers. Sub-subsidiaries, dormant holding companies and short accounting periods, worked through in a single example.
An acquisition partway through the year still counts as an associated company for the whole accounting period. What that does to your thresholds, and to your tax bill.
