FREE TRACKER

FREE TRACKER: the two expenses almost everyone under-claims

Mileage and working from home are the costs people guess downwards at the year end, because the record never got kept. The mileage rate also went up to 55p in April 2026 and was backdated, so a claim built on last year’s numbers is short before it starts.

Four sheets, no macros, updated for the April 2026 rate changes.

WHAT’S INSIDE

Recorded beats remembered, every time

A mileage log that handles the threshold

Journey by journey, with the reason against each one. The first 10,000 car miles are at 55p and the rest at 25p, including the single journey that falls partly either side of the line, which is where simpler calculators go wrong.

Working from home, all three routes

Sole traders can take the flat rate or apportion actual costs, and the sheet says which is worth more. Directors get the route that survived April 2026, where the company reimburses you rather than you claiming it personally.

What it is actually worth

Both totals in one place, converted into tax saved at your marginal rate. The worked example claims just under £6,400 for the year, of which £1,000 is purely the mileage uplift that a calculator still using 45p would miss.
