Divide by 260 days and you finish the year £22,892 short
Freelance Day Rate Calculator
Your rate has to cover holiday, sick days and the time you spend finding work. On 167 billable days £64,000 needs £383 a day, not £246.
Freelance Day Rate Calculator
A year has 260 working days and you can invoice for about two thirds of them. This works your rate back from what you need and the days you can actually charge for.

Three things worth knowing
Utilisation is billable days over the working year. The correct rate divided by the naive one is always the working year divided by your billable days.
A day a week on admin, pitching, invoicing, chasing and marketing is the honest default. If you think yours is less, log it for a month before you change the number.
This is before tax, and before the cost of a quiet month, which is a cash flow problem rather than a pricing one.

Trading profit is split on a time basis. Interest, rent, gains, donations and dividends each follow their own rule, and mixing them up misstates both accounting periods.
A long period of account needs two separate capital allowances computations, and since April 2026 they are not even calculated at the same writing down rate.
Company law allows accounts to run for 18 months; corporation tax never allows an accounting period longer than 12. Here is how the split is drawn.
