Never discount a retainer below your utilisation
Retainer vs Project Calculator
A retainer buys guaranteed hours at a lower rate. At 64 per cent utilisation, 80 per cent of your rate is worth taking. Below 64 per cent it is not.
Retainer vs Project Calculator
The most you should discount a retainer is exactly your utilisation on that capacity. Below that you are better off keeping the hours free.

Three things worth knowing
The test is whether the discounted rate divided by your full rate beats your utilisation. At 64 per cent utilisation a retainer at 80 per cent of your rate is comfortably worth it.
The busier you are, the less discount a retainer is worth. At full utilisation any discount is simply a lower rate.
This does not price the two things a retainer really buys: smoother cash flow, and a client who is easier to keep.

Trading profit is split on a time basis. Interest, rent, gains, donations and dividends each follow their own rule, and mixing them up misstates both accounting periods.
A long period of account needs two separate capital allowances computations, and since April 2026 they are not even calculated at the same writing down rate.
Company law allows accounts to run for 18 months; corporation tax never allows an accounting period longer than 12. Here is how the split is drawn.
