A download has no materials, no postage and no packaging, so Etsy's fees are the whole cost. And those fees are 40p of fixed charges plus about 11 per cent, which means the rate you actually pay depends almost entirely on what you charge.

The same download at four prices. Nothing about the product changes down this table. Only the share Etsy takes does.
Two things worth knowing
The fixed part is the whole story. Forty pence of listing and processing charges is 20 per cent of a two pound sale and 2 per cent of a twenty pound one, which is why cheap downloads are so much worse than they look. Bundling three files into one listing at three times the price pays the 40p once instead of three times.
On VAT, Etsy is the deemed supplier for digital downloads to UK and EU consumers, so it collects and accounts for the VAT on the sale itself rather than you. That means you do not have to register for VAT purely because you sell downloads to consumers.
What it does not automatically mean is that those sales sit outside your own £90,000 registration threshold. That turns on how your supply to Etsy is characterised, and it is worth getting a straight answer on before you assume either way, particularly if you sell physical items as well and the two together are approaching the threshold.
Selling physical items too?
The fee arithmetic is the same but materials, postage and packaging change the answer completely, and the fixed fees stop being the thing that matters.

Trading profit is split on a time basis. Interest, rent, gains, donations and dividends each follow their own rule, and mixing them up misstates both accounting periods.
A long period of account needs two separate capital allowances computations, and since April 2026 they are not even calculated at the same writing down rate.
Company law allows accounts to run for 18 months; corporation tax never allows an accounting period longer than 12. Here is how the split is drawn.
