Why there is no VAT reclaim line on an Etsy bill

Etsy bills UK sellers from its Irish company. If you give Etsy a VAT number, the reverse charge applies and Etsy adds no VAT to its fees at all. You record the same amount as output tax and input tax on your return, which nets to nothing.

If you give Etsy no VAT number, it charges you 20 per cent UK VAT on every fee, and you cannot recover any of it because you are not registered.

So the fee bill is exactly a sixth cheaper once you are registered. Amazon and eBay reach the same place by charging the VAT and letting you reclaim it. Etsy gets there by never charging it, which is why sellers looking for a reclaim line on their Etsy statement never find one.

Registration is still usually a net cost, because the VAT you hand over on the sale is far larger than what you save on the fees. The figure above shows both sides of that rather than only the flattering one.
