Anyone claiming the flat rate because it is easier
It usually is easier and it is usually smaller. On the demo the flat rate gives £312 a year and a proper apportionment gives £408, so the easy option costs £96 of deduction and about £25 of tax.

Anyone working from a spare room
Take the household running costs, divide by the rooms you actually live in, then apply the share of business use. The sheet does the arithmetic and warns you if you push business use to 100 per cent, which can drag part of your home into capital gains tax when you sell.

Anyone unsure what else they can claim
The second tab is a plain eleven row list: six things that are deductible, one that is partly, and four that never are. Entertaining clients, your own drawings and parking fines are on the wrong side of it, whatever you have been told.
